The knowledge of medicinal plants/herbs has been passed on continuously since Vedic period. Atherveda is the main source of Ayurveda. Due to the continued efforts of great minds like Dhanwantari, Charak and Shushruta, Ayurveda was developed as the first Indian medical system but the efforts to boost its acceptability and study on its efficacy are few and far between in recent times.
Plant derived medicines are complex chemical mixtures, raw plant material, processed plant medicine and herbal products. Different countries have adopted different approaches to dispensing, manufacturing and training to ensure their quality, efficiency and marketing. Hence, there is need to develop standard protocol for methodology and authenticity of herbal medicines.
Phytochemistry and Ayurveda Society which is a non government, nonprofit, non-business and charitable society has been established on January 8, 2020 with registration no. UK 06003012020003048 under Registration Act 21 of 1860 to backup claims of efficiency of Ayurveda, its acceptability and to make efforts to revamp and reorient research on herbal products and document their assessments scientifically.
